The Board That Started It All: Walnut & Resin Serving Boards

This is my very first board and what started everything...

There's a moment — if you've ever worked with walnut — where the grain reveals itself under the first pass of a plane, and you just stop. You stand there, sawdust in the air, and you think: this is something.

That's where our serving boards begin. Not with a design sketch or a customer order, but with a piece of wood that has something to say.

Why Walnut?

Walnut is one of those woods that earns its reputation. Rich, dark, and deeply grained, it carries a warmth that lighter woods simply can't replicate. It's dense enough to hold up to daily use — slicing, serving, the occasional cheese knife dragged across its surface — but it finishes beautifully, taking oil in a way that deepens its color and brings out the figure in the grain.

We source our walnut carefully. We're looking for slabs with character: live edges, interesting grain patterns, the occasional knot or mineral streak that tells you this tree lived a full life before it became part of yours.

Where Resin Comes In

Resin is where the magic gets a little unpredictable — and that's exactly why we love it.

When a slab has a crack, a void, or a natural hollow, most woodworkers fill it and move on. We see it differently. Those imperfections are an invitation. We pour food-safe epoxy resin — tinted, layered, sometimes with a whisper of metalite or deep ocean blue — and let it cure slowly, filling the negative space with something that feels almost geological.

The result is a board that's part wood, part art. No two are ever the same. The resin catches light differently depending on the angle, the time of day, the candles on your table. It's a living surface in the best possible way.

Built for the Table, Made to Last

Every serving board we make is finished with food-safe oils and waxes — nothing that will harm your food, your family, or the board itself over time. With proper care (a little mineral oil every few months, hand washing only), a Triple Bay Made serving board will outlast the trends, the dinner parties, and maybe even the kitchen it lives in.

We make these boards to be used. Set out a charcuterie spread. Slice a sourdough loaf. Let your guests run their hands along the edge and ask where you got it.

That's the moment we make them for.

Care Tips for Your Walnut & Resin Board

  • Hand wash only — never the dishwasher. Heat and prolonged moisture are the enemy of both wood and resin.
  • Oil regularly — food-grade mineral oil or our Triple Bay Made board conditioner keeps the walnut hydrated and the resin gleaming.
  • Dry upright — standing the board on its edge after washing prevents warping.
  • Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods — UV can yellow some resin colors over time.

Questions about a specific board, or want to talk about a custom piece? We'd love to hear from you. Every conversation starts with a piece of wood and a good idea.
